Robert has over 35 years of experience as a Director of Photography with film, digital, HD and stills. He understands the film-making process that goes into photographing a good story whether 30 seconds or 3 hours long. Prior to working as a DP (Director of Photography) Robert gaffed and LD (light directed) for many years before transitioning into cinematography. From 1985 to 2004, Robert owned Lightsmith Electrical and Grip Company in Colorado; working with established bi-coastal production companies, as well as international firms.
Robert’s range of productions is vast. He has worked on large-scale scripted network television productions, feature films, documentaries, over 900 national and regional television commercials, infomercials, corporate videos, music videos, reality television, talk shows, and The Oscars, Emmy Awards, and Golden Globes. Robert lensed two features with theatrical distribution: “Food for the Soul” and “Skills Like This” (winner SXSW 2007 Best of the Festival). In 2006 Robert was camera operator on the feature, “Right at Your Door,” a project that won the “Excellence in Cinematography” award at the Sundance Film Festival.
Celebrating his accomplishments, Robert has been nominated 12 times for an Emmy Awards, of which he has won 8. He has also received several Telly Awards for his work.
With such a broad array of experience in the industry, it’s only natural that he would teach others what he loves. Robert has taught as an Adjunct Professor for USC School of Cinema, including a summer program in the Middle East; he has guest lectured at other universities over the years as well.
Thanks Robert for making our client’s shoots great and we look forward to working with you for many years to come.
