The boom is a super cardiod microphone. It has excellent pickup range. It also needs to be powered by Phantom Power. All of my mixers can power phantom power. Here is a list of them in order or how I rank them: Zoom F4 (Four Channel Polywav 24-bit Recorder, Expandable by two tracks) https://www.sharegrid.com/losangeles/l/115994?type=rent Zoom H6 (Four Channel Mono 24-bit Recorder, Expandable by two tracks) https://www.sharegrid.com/losangeles/l/85204?type=rent Zoom H4n (Two Channel Stereo 24-bit Recorder, with four channel option where mounted microphones are recording audio) https://www.sharegrid.com/losangeles/l/64208?type=rent The cables in picture 3 and 4 aren't included in the rental, but are available upon request. Picture 3 is if you are mounting the boom to the camera and want a short range for the xlr. Picture 4 is a splitter. It's always good to have a high and a low track to keep from overmodulating and higher dynamic range. This allows that. Each splitter is $2/day and 1 is free with an order over $25. Remember it's ideal to have the boom come from above, coming from below isn't ideal but is plan B because it picks up more reverberation. Be sure to compensate for that. I have a second Audio Technica 897 microphone and boom package. https://www.sharegrid.com/losangeles/l/64218?type=rent This boom microphone has two positives: -It runs on AA power. (You don't have to have Phantom Power running for the microphone which drains your mixer battery faster. -This may be an odd example, but once I was recording a drum solo and this microphone was too loud to record the loud sound of a drum clean so I needed the 897. You can see the drum video here: http://jbcameraproductions.com/brandon-stegall-the-solo/ The 897 microphone is a backup boom in case the person speaking is already very loud. Since it's pickup is quieter, it allows you to turn down the microphone and have a lot more dynamic range than the 4073a. If you've scouted the location and you know there is going to be heavy wind, I recommend getting a zeppelin cover https://www.sharegrid.com/losangeles/l/64227?type=rent Zeppelin cover's are useful for heavy wind protection. To tell you the truth, this was most useful to me in SF. In LA, it's not as windy, except by the beach. I've also been out to the desert and it is windy out there. So if you're filming out in the desert might consider getting the zeppelin cover. Also, this package includes a carbon fiber boom by K-Tek which is incredibly light and also has a cable with a line going in at the top and coming out the bottom. Be sure not to damage the cable by resting the boom pole down on the cable. If I have a 90 degree cable for you, then you may rest it down. If not, refrain from resting the bottom end of the boom down. This is a great package for features, commercials, television shows. Any kind of overall content's sound could benefit from having one of these excellent mics.
