How to Shoot Slow Motion on the Sony a7S II

Unlike some cameras that complicate high frame rate recording with special modes or extra settings, Sony makes it remarkably easy to shoot 120fps slow motion on the a7S II. Check it out:

1 - Set the Camera to XAVC-S HD

Press the menu button, then toggle over to camera menu 2. Here you will find File Format, where you need to select XAVC-S HD. This is Sony’s proprietary high-efficiency codec, recording at 1920x1080. It is the strongest option available in 1080p, and should always be your default choice when in doubt.

2 - Choose a Record Setting

Directly below the File Format sub-menu, you should see Record Setting, which will allow you to choose a frame rate and a bit rate. You can shoot 120p at either 60mbps or 100 mbps. Both are very efficiently compressed, so it is almost always preferable to record at a higher bit rate to preserve the quality of the image as much as possible.
