How to Record 4K UHD on the ARRI Alexa Mini

ARRI has, for many years now, insisted that 3K capture is just fine for your filmmaking needs. So you may be confused how they can also brag that the Alexa Mini records UHD in the same breath. Simple: because they are adding a 1.2x scaling for you in-camera. Their sensor isn’t 3840 pixels wide, but the final image can be. So if you or someone you know requires beautiful UHD footage, then read on to learn how.

ARRI, ever the masters of simple and intuitive menu design, have made this process incredibly easy. Press Menu, open Recording, and select Resolution. Down towards the bottom you will see 4K UHD. Select it, and you are in. It is worth noting, however, that this option is only available in ProRes. If you are shooting in ARRIRAW, your maximum resolution will be 2.8K. Or, if you bought the 4:3 license, your new maximum will be 3.4K Open Gate. You’ll just have to do the scaling for yourself.
